K. N. Neelakantan Elayath

Professor (Dr.) K. N. Neelakantan Elayath (b. 1943), retired Professor of Sanskrit at the University of Calicut and former Director of the Adyar Library and Research Centre (The Theosophical Society International Headquarters, Adyar, Chennai), has distinguished himself as a reputed scholar of Sanskrit and allied subjects. His interests cover a wide spectrum — from Vedic studies, Indian philosophy, aesthetics, and language studies to technical sciences, management studies, and other Sanskrit-related subjects. Indian philosophy, being one of his favorite subjects, has drawn a substantial share of his philosophical writing, in which he highlights its contemporary relevance and meaning.

Both as a teacher and a researcher, he has worked to promote Sanskrit studies through multi-disciplinary approaches, making traditional Indian wisdom meaningful and relevant to contemporary knowledge. He has published several books and papers, both in English and Malayalam, and his magnum opus, The Ethics of Sankara, has become one of the most popular works on Advaita Vedanta.

As a teacher for nearly four decades, he has taught generations of students. He has also guided many students in research leading to a Ph.D., besides carrying out considerable research of his own. His publications include papers and articles on various aspects of Sanskrit studies, such as Indian philosophy, literary criticism, and language studies, as well as technical subjects like Indian architecture and music.

He completed his post-graduation in Sanskrit at the University of Madras in 1966, and served for a few years as Assistant Professor of Sanskrit in the Madras Government collegiate service. During the period of his higher education, he had the opportunity to study under eminent scholars such as Dr. V. Raghavan, Dr. K. Kunjunni Raja, and V. Kalyanasundara Sastrikal. After receiving his Ph.D. in 1975, he joined Sree Krishna College at Guruvayoor and taught Sanskrit there for more than a decade. He later joined Calicut University, where he served as Professor of Sanskrit until 2003, continuing afterward as Emeritus Professor. He has also served as UGC Visiting Professor and, for a time, as Dean of the Faculty of Indian Metaphysics at Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit. In 2006 he joined the Adyar Library and Research Centre, where he served — voluntarily — as Director of the Centre until 2014.

In addition to teaching and research, he has taken part in All-India Oriental Conferences, national and international seminars, philosophical congresses, colloquia, and workshops in various parts of India, either as a delegate or as a resource person. He has also served as a member of the Postgraduate Board of Studies in Sanskrit, the Faculty of Languages, and the Academic Council of Calicut University, as well as a member of the Syndicate and Dean at Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit. He is also the recipient of the Kerala Sahitya Academy award (1984), the Vachaspati award (2012), the O. K. Munshi Award for Sanskrit Scholar (2020), the Vilvamangala Puraskriti (2023), and the Vijnanapeedhom Award of the Sri Sankara Trust, Kerala (2023). He has traveled extensively in the United States (2014–2019), visiting a number of universities.
